Ten of the Best Sustainable Homewares for Ethical Interiors

Fresh_Save_Article_Images_1240x550

We all want to live more sustainably. And while a good first step is to reduce our plastic use, cut back on food waste and buy sustainable produce, the next thing to consider is shopping for ethical homewares. But don’t worry – there’s no reason to compromise on style just because you’re switching to a more sustainable alternative. Here at ZWILLING we know all about combining eco solutions with practical use and aesthetic appeal. For instance, our Fresh & Save collection of food storage containers will help you to reduce food waste. The vacuum sealed bags and boxes can be used to store leftovers, pre-prepared meals and ingredients for up to five times longer. This means food is kept fresh, tastes great, retains all its vitamins and nutrients and lasts longer. To help kit your home out with further sustainable solutions, here’s our pick of the top 10 brands that combine ethical options with serious chic…

WEAVER GREEN

Take one cider-maker and one flooring specialist, put them together and you have a company that makes recycled rugs and textiles from discarded plastic bottles! Founders of Weaver Green, Tasha and Barney have merged their talents, love of antique textiles and strong environmental ethos to give plastic a second, more long-term use within our homes. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, the sustainable rugs have the look and feel of wool but are also machine washable and stain resistant. You can also find recycled blankets, footstools, cushions and bags and everyone involved in the process is treated fairly and paid accordingly, too.

NATURAL COLLECTION

Alongside fashion, beauty, baby and child and groceries, Natural Collection also sells a fantastic selection of homewares and cleaning products that are either eco-friendly, fair trade or organic. We love their artisan crafted accessories, outdoor furniture and kitchen essentials. There are plenty of things to furnish the home as well as lots of gift ideas with handmade products from around the world and unique recycled items. Check out their soft furnishings, lighting, storage baskets, candles and bedding. The Panda bedding set for instance is made from bamboo viscose, which is naturally antibacterial to help protect against hayfever and allergies.

AERENDE

A ‘life-improving’ homewares brand, Aerende sells gorgeous gifts and interior products made in the UK by people facing social challenges. This non-profit organisation was founded in 2016 by Emily Mathieson, a former travel editor for The Guardian, Condé Nast Traveller and Red. Her passion and search for beautiful, locally made homewares led her to question the lack of high-quality options in the ethical interiors market. The result is a space for considerate, socially valuable shopping that includes pottery, kitchenware, accessories and candles. Our favourite pieces include the Dip Glaze Jug, Contrast-Edge Linen Napkins and Stoneware Coffee Cup and Saucer.

ANEMONE & BASILIC

For ‘eco-friendly chic’, Anemone & Basilic sells sustainable handmade products with a high quality look and feel. Its mission is to offer eco-friendly alternatives to daily essentials. With everything from Linen Bread Bags and Beeswax Food Wraps to an Eco Wash Laundry Set, the aim is to help us reduce waste without compromising on style and beauty. You’ll find plastic-free products, reusable, recyclable, biodegradable and sustainably sourced materials. All of which are simply styled and branded as well as practical and perfect for everyday use. There’s even a section called On the Go with Reusable Sandwich Wrap, Reusable Snack Bags and Travel Mugs, ideal for picnics and lunch on the move.

ECOSOPHY

Founded by Kate Anderson, Ecosophy is the place to shop for sustainable bedding, towels and soft furnishings. Products are made by artisanal and fair trade groups using sustainable fibres and natural or low impact dyes. Everything, from the provenance and the people who make the products, to the textiles themselves, are carefully considered and ethical. All the designs are inspired by nature and only natural fibres and plant-based dyes are used. We love the muted colour palette and subtle prints that will complement all styles of interior. Check out the Organic Linen Bedding, the Natural Indigo Cushion Covers and the beautiful Handwoven Organic Cotton Towels.

BRÜÜN

Offering ‘considered design, combining simplicity, function and form’, Brüün makes products for a pared-back lifestyle and interior. Not only does its kitchenware and accessories have a lovely minimal Scandi look but everything is crafted from responsibly sourced materials. The products are made in small batches in the design studio near Bristol. Designer-maker Steve Brüün specialises in handmade bespoke kitchens and furniture, training as a cabinetmaker. Now with over 30 years’ experience, Steve has brought his skills to creating carefully crafted homewares using timber from well-managed British and European forests. There are peg rails, chopping boards, egg cups, storage racks, shelves, ornaments, vases and candle holders, all of which are sleek and sustainable.

SECRET LINEN STORE

Made from natural ingredients, Secret Linen Store’s linen and Egyptian cotton bedding, pillows and duvets are made using sustainable practices. Even the packaging is eco-friendly with thin, unbranded ribbon, which can be reused, plus recyclable paper wrap and tape. The fabrics themselves are from factories who are Oeko-Tex 100 certified. Check out the bedlinen, towels, curtains, accessories and nightwear, all of which are perfect for classic and contemporary bedroom schemes. Bedding is made by carefully chosen experts in Portugal and the UK and everything has a luxury look and feel. We love the Walter Stripe design in particular.

FRENCHIC

When you’re looking for an eco-friendly chalk and mineral furniture paint, Frenchic is the perfect choice. Easy to apply and durable and available in a fabulous selection of colours, its palette is toxin and solvent-free. There’s no nasty smell as there are no VOCs and it’s safe to use on children’s furniture. There’s a paint for every project, indoors or out, so whether you want to give the front door a whole new look or upcycle an old chest of drawers, this is the place to visit. There’s an Original Artisan range, Al Fresco Inside/Outside, Chalk Wall Paint, Trim and Easy Crackle just for starters. There are also some really helpful how-to videos on its website.

PRIORMADE

Priormade sells modern homewares, lighting and jewellery using a range of sustainable, low impact and recycled materials. Founder Rebecca’s handmade collection is individually made in the workshop. There’s no waste, as all offcuts are used to make key rings, magnets and jewellery or donated to a reusable waste charity. We love the Geo Vessels, which come with painted sides and tops in a gorgeous array of colours. And check out the matching Geo lamps too, perfect for bedrooms and living spaces.

PASOLUNA

Plastic-free and planet-friendly, Pasoluna’s collections are also zero waste, vegan-friendly or recycled. For all sorts of sustainable homeware and gifts, this is a fantastic resource. You’ll find everything you need under the different headers of Plastic Friendly and so on, so it’s easy to find what you want. There are Compostable Dishcloths, Natural Fibre Wooden Dishbrushes, plant pots made from waterproof recycled paper and so much more.
