A Beginner’s Guide to Meal Prep

Cooking up the evening meal day in, day out can sometimes involve scrabbling around in the cupboards and fridge to see what ingredients we can throw together. Having the time to create a carefully thought-out meal that considers all the essential food groups, nutrients and vitamins can be tricky after a long day. As well as not having the energy or time, the pitfalls of winging it in the kitchen include wasting food that has gone past its best, throwing out leftovers when we’ve cooked too much and losing money in the process.

We all need to reduce the amount of food we send to landfill and saving money is always a welcome idea, so why not change your culinary habits and start planning and prepping your meals ahead of time?

With ZWILLING’s Fresh & Save collection of vacuum sealed food storage containers, it’s easy to serve up a freshly cooked meal every day of the week. No more worrying about what’s for dinner as you head home from the office or switch off the laptop at your home workstation. All it takes is a little organisation and planning at the weekend and you’re all set for the week to come.

ZWILLING Fresh & Save is a range of glass and plastic storage boxes and bags that, when sealed with the vacuum pump, keep food fresh for up to five times’ longer. The vacuum sealing process locks in goodness and flavour, so you can prepare and cook meals for the coming week and simply reheat and serve up when needed. To help you get started, ZWILLING has a handy Meal Prepper to download, which gives you a weekly schedule to help make planning and preparation even easier.

By preparing meals ahead of time, say on a quiet Sunday afternoon, you’ll have more time during the week for sports, hobbies or simply ferrying the kids around to their various clubs and activities. Prepping ahead is also a great way of avoiding the morning rush as you can get everyone’s packed lunches ready ahead of time too. Food is vacuum sealed for freshness, and it can be used on everything from soups, salads and pasta dishes to marinated meat, sous vide salmon, chopped vegetables or tasty side dishes.

The ZWILLING Fresh & Save collection includes cold and heat-resistant glass boxes, which are suitable for use in ovens up to 180°C {with lid removed} and microwaves {with vacuum seal released}. The plastic boxes are made of BPA-free plastic and are odourless, airtight and microwave-safe for reheating meals, even with the lid on – simply release the vacuum first. They are also ideal for the freezer and are dishwasher-safe. The BPA-free, reusable Vacuum Bags are also a great way of storing pre-prepared ingredients and meals and they can be sealed securely and simply using the zipper.

This simple process works by filling the Fresh & Save box or bag with ingredients or a prepared meal then attaching the smart wireless Vacuum Pump to the corresponding valve. The pump extracts all the air in seconds and stops automatically when finished. All you need to do is press the push button in the valve to seal it securely.

The smart Fresh & Save collection also features a QR code for use with the ZWILLING Culinary World app {available to download from the App Store and Google Play}, which reminds you of food’s extended shelf life. Just scan the QR code with a smartphone or tablet and type in the contents. Select where it’s going to be stored – cupboard, fridge or freezer - and the app will calculate the extended shelf life, reminding you before the prepared meal expires.

Once you’ve bought the kit, it’s time to sit down and start planning and prepping those meals. Make a list of what you want to cook then all the ingredients you’ll need. Check what you already have so you don’t double up and start enjoying the new freedom that a little planning ahead will create.
